GENERAL INFORMATION

A tantalizing documentary as hilarious as it is tragic, the critically acclaimed theatrical hit, LOST IN LA MANCHA, tracks maverick filmmaker Terry Gilliam's madcap mission to film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. As he struggles to complete his masterpiece, he and his cast and crew are beset by obstacles more catastrophic than anything Hollywood could have imagined. With an all-star cast featuring Johnny Depp and one of cinema's most daring directors at the helm, Gilliam's larger-than-life project seems destined for success. And yet, Gilliam's fanciful dream turns into a filmmaker's nightmare as a limited budget, the deafening roar of F-16s flying overhead and a hailstorm straight from the Bible all conspire to halt the film's production. Capturing this mayhem on camera, the filmmakers were granted unlimited, behind-the-scenes access to Gilliam's frantic but inspired creation. With Jeff Bridges as narrator, they include surviving footage from the film and intimate interviews with an infectiously energetic Gilliam, his cast and his crew to reveal what must be the only 'unmaking of' in the history of cinema.

ABOUT THIS MOVIE

Quotes from Johnny Depp:

"I'd love to do it again... well, I don't want to do that again, If there's any way to avoid the curse that would be better. I'd love to do the film, if at all possible, and I stress that 'if at all possible' because it was really going to be good, that was the thing we all felt. It was really sad. It was really going to be good, like the best of Terry Gilliam. I felt really good about my character, and the good news is that if he wants to go back and do that, I already know the character, so I have less homework to do."

"It wasn't just rain, it was enormous rocks of hail which hit me on the head and filled the pockets of my coat full of ice. I've been in torrential downpours before but this was insane - I've never seen anything like it, it was epic, it was like Noah's Ark or something."

"So apart from the weather, we were dealing with bombing raids. Nato was using it for target practice. The set was here(he places his tobacco on the table) and base camp, the trailers and stuff, was here(he puts his Zippo down) and these bastards were coming in and dropping bombs right here (he pokes a long, elegant finger in the space between the tobacco and the Zippo and laughs.) I remember thinking, hey - I hope they don't **** up"

"Terry was so excited; you know how he is - big and broad and just exploding with excitement and giggling constantly. He's an insanely passionate, curious and knowledgeable man. And he was loving it, just loving it - then, day by day, you'd see him shrink. It was hard to see Terry like that; he looked beaten - and Terry's a hard guy to beat."

"One of the things I hope Lost in la Mancha will do is kill all those myths about Terry being a renegade and a sort of careless wackadoo filmmaker; spend, spend, spend. You can see how badly he wanted to shoot, he just wanted to make the film, really. He cut the budget radically to a size that probably wasn't enough, but he was willing to make it work. And then everything just went against us."

Quotes from others:

"I know that Terry still wants to make it and he probably will never give up on trying to make it."

"It was a fantastic role because it allows him to start off as complete a**hole and eventually reach a transcendental state. I wanted to take the entire range of Johnny and who he is and what he's capable of, and play with it. He tends to get these parts where he's lovely or innocent or whatever, and I thought, let's stretch him and let him really play on a broad canvas. He's much more interesting than the world knows. There's a sting to Johnny's tail that most people haven't seen, and I thought we should incorporate some of that."

"Well, somebody's got to make a film and if it's not going to be me then it might as well be you."

"That's my guy (Johnny). He'll make a brilliant pirate. Whatever it takes. Whatever it takes to make him a big superstar so we can raise a lot money on him for the next Quixote."

"Johnny developed a strange empathy for my position during filming. I had a trailer that was a lot smaller than his. He demanded that I would get one that was at least as big as his. I was lying in the back of an ambulance that took me back to the nearest town, when I saw an incredible convoy with their headlights on: it was the trailer."
